PALMETTO GIVING DAY TO RAISE FUNDS FOR NON-PROFITS SERVING GEORGETOWN COUNTY ON MAY 2017
GEORGETOWN | Grand Strand residents will soon have another opportunity to assist local non-profits trying to improve the literacy skills of children in low-income communities and building better fathers, as well as supporting popular annual events and efforts to feed and clothe the homeless.
That day is Palmetto Giving Day, an area connection to Give Local America, a day-long fund-raiser for 32 Georgetown County non-profits.
A free drop-in style event designed for local families and tourists alike will be held at the Hammock Shops from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on May 2 to promote the event. It will feature food from local eateries such as Bisquits, Sheriff's Chicken Bogg, & Danny's BBQ. Bisquits will also provide a cash bar for beer and wine. A live band will be performing.
In 2016, about 24 Georgetown County nonprofits collectively raised $369,000 in the 24-hour online giving event held on the first Tuesday of May. The goal this year is $500,000 for 32 non-profits participating, a 33 percent jump in participants in a single year.
Ashley Nelson of the Bunnelle Foundation is working as project manager of Palmetto Giving Day, just another of the many ways the Bunnelle Foundation tries to improve Georgetown County. Bunnelle regularly makes monetary grants to a variety of non-profits serving the county.
The 32 participants include A Father’s Place, Brookgreen Gardens and Freedom Readers, which serve Horry and other counties, in addition to Georgetown. Participants include the well-known Miss Ruby’s Kids, Georgetown County Family YMCA, Habitat For Humanity, Helping Hands of Georgetown and Winyah Rivers Foundation. The Barnabas Horse Foundation, Dragon Boat at the Beach, Murrells Inlet 2020 and St. Frances Animal Center are also participating.
Other South Carolina participants in Give Local America include the Eastern Carolina Community Foundation in Florence, the Central Carolina Community Foundation in Columbia and foundations in Spartanburg and Lancaster.
For more information, please contact Nelson at (843) 237-1222. The event is one of the most important of the year for many of the participating non-profits. Any help in raising awareness about Palmetto Giving Day will be invaluable.
